Biography

Stephen Scott is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the CAMHS Adoption and Fostering Service and the Conduct Problems Service. He is also a Professor of Child Health and Behaviour at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London and He is the Director of the National Academy for Parenting Research, London.

Professor Scott studied at Cambridge University and the Royal London Hospital. He worked as a paediatrician for five years, including periods at the Brompton Hospital and Great Ormond Street, before training in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Maudsley under Professor Sir Michael Rutter and Professor Eric Taylor.

Research

  • A randomised controlled trial on Fostering Changes, a British programme for foster carers
  • The Helping Children Achieve trial, which compares the impact of (1) helping parents of five and six year olds read with their child, (2) relationship improvement programmes, and (3) both in combination
  • Developing a new programme for parents with high needs
  • A randomised controlled trial of Functional Family Therapy for serious teenage antisocial behaviour and delinquency
  • The measurement of parenting
  • An economic evaluation on the cost effectiveness of parenting intervention programmes, in conjunction with the London School of Economics
  • He has been involved in papers on the economic cost of conduct disorders, and on three randomised controlled trials that cover the effectiveness of parent training in clinical practice, preventively in schools, and then disseminating it less expensively (see publication list).
  • A follow-up study was also carried out on the effectiveness of parent training, including its effectiveness in preventing the development of personality disorders.
