Eileen Skellern 1 (ES1) is a psychiatric intensive care ward (PICU) at the Maudsley Hospital. We offer care for women, aged 16-65, who live in the London Borough of Southwark.

Our team includes health and social care staff from a range of professions. We provide secure psychiatric and intensive hospital care for people who have severe and ongoing mental illnesses whose behaviour makes them unsafe, either to themselves or others, and who cannot be treated in an open ward.

We provide assessment, treatment and intensive nursing care.

A small number of people are brought to hospital under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. This is a power that police officers can use if someone is in a public place and the police have concerns about them. We have a separate, designated place of safety, a ‘‘136 Suite’’, where they can be admitted, assessed and cared for. The police also have powers under the Mental Capacity Act to take someone, either from a public place or their home, to a place of safety - normally this would be to an Emergency Department.
