Non-executive director Mike Franklin appointed as Joint Director of Equality and Inclusion at NHS England and NHS Improvement

Mike Franklin, Non-Executive Director at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, will be joining NHSE/I as Joint Director of Equality and Inclusion.
The role, which Mike will share with Jenni Douglas –Todd, will ensure equality and inclusion underpins, and is at the forefront of, workforce aspirations, including the delivery of NHSE/I’s People Plan Update.
Mike will continue as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Directors at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where he chairs the Equalities and Workforce Committee, champions Freedom to Speak Up and is a member of SLaM's Mental Health Law Committee.
Mike Franklin said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this position, where I will continue to champion equality and diversity across the health service and beyond, so we can improve the access, experiences and health outcomes for all patients, staff and communities.
“It is vital that we continue the work to ensure we end inequality and discrimination. Covid-19 has a disproportionate impact on BAME communities which has highlighted inequalities across our workforce and we must do everything we can to keep improving.”
Mike Franklin is a former commissioner with the Independent Police Complaints Commission. He was also Her Majesty's Assistant Inspector of Constabulary and has acted as a specialist assistant inspector for race and diversity across 43 police forces in England and Wales.
Mike was Chair of the Community Police Consultative Group for Lambeth and also served on the TUC race relations committee. Having grown up in Lambeth and Southwark, Mike is passionate about advocating for and engaging with diverse local communities. He was also a non-executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
