Susan Scarsbrook

Elected governor - Carers

"I cared for my husband at home for ten years after he was diagnosed with atypical Alzheimers and dyspraxia at the age of 58. He is currently in a Lambeth specialist unit receiving care.

"I have been a member of SUCAG (Service Users and Carers Group) for two years and have slowly increased my understanding of the work of the Trust. Now that I am beginning to appreciate the challenges and workings of the CAG I feel more able to contribute time and energy to supporting the service from which my family is receiving help. I am committed to promoting and championing its invaluable work and also challenging where appropriate.

"My working life was spent in teaching in Lambeth. I was headteacher of a successful primary school in Brixton and have lived in Lambeth for 45 years.

"My experiences of caring for my husband have been life changing and had an immeasurable impact on our family. Our journey has been painful and involved a range of support services along the way, some helpful, others less so. Our experiences and those I have heard from other carers in SUCAG have convinced me of the vital contribution carers can make to the improvement of the service. I hope that if I were elected as a member of the council of governors I would be able to champion the role of carers in a constructive way."
