Prof Ian Norman

Appointed governor

Professor Ian Norman is the Executive Dean of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery and the Assistant Principal (Academic Development) at King’s College London. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Nursing Studies, the most influential academic nursing journal in the world currently ranked number one in Thomson-Reuters’ impact factor list of 116 academic nursing journals.

Ian is a qualified mental health nurse, general nurse and learning disability nurse and social worker. He is also an accredited cognitive behavioural therapist (CBT) and from 2009 – 2016 held an honorary appointment as a CBT therapist in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where he worked with people with complex mental health difficulties.

Ian’s research programme is concerned primarily with the study of workforce related and education and training initiatives for improving the delivery of health and social care and the outcome of these initiatives for mental health service users, staff, and services. His latest book (co-edited with Iain Ryrie) The Art and Science of Mental Health Nursing, first published by McGraw Hill in 2004, is a standard text for mental health nurse education in the UK; currently in its third edition the fourth edition is due to be published in 2018.
