Maudsley Masterclass- Approaching Complex Capacity Assessments

Course outline:
This course is aimed at medical, nursing and other healthcare professionals who frequently encounter issues around decision-making capacity whilst caring for their patients. Supported by the latest research in the field, and taught by legal and psychiatric experts on capacity, the course will teach advanced skills relating to how to approach, manage and record complex capacity assessments.

Key speakers:
Dr Nuala Kane is a Mental Health Research UK MD(Res) scholar with the Mental Health and Justice Project, and a higher trainee in general adult and older adult psychiatry in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Dr Gareth Owen is a clinical senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London and an honorary consultant psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He is Principal Investigator on the Wellcome-funded Mental Health and Justice Project.

Alex Ruck Keene is a barrister at 39 Essex Street Chambers and visiting research fellow at the Dickson Poon School of Law, KCL. He has expertise in mental health and capacity law, policy and guidelines, and is Senior Legal Researcher on the Contested Capacity workstream of the Mental Health and Justice Project.
