SLaM and its partners are investing £140 million in modern new mental healthcare services and facilities at our Maudsley Hospital site, providing better care and experience for local people, and developing new approaches to improve prevention, early intervention and treatments.

Work is well underway including:

- Redeveloping Douglas Bennett House on our Maudsley Hospital site:

Plans to create eight modern new, adult inpatient wards: four Acute, one PICU, two specialist wards (adult eating disorders and neuropsychiatry) as well as the Tony Hillis Unit (high dependency rehabilitation unit for men). These have been designed by patients, carers, clinicians and specialist architects working together to create a modern fit for purpose wards, and a much-improved environment for patients and staff.

- Developing the unique new Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People, with our partners:

The Maudsley Charity
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience – King’s College London
Individual donors, trusts and foundations including The Pears Foundation

This brand new facility will include improved mental health services and facilities for local children and young people including inpatient, outpatient and crisis care with a world-leading facility.

It will bring frontline clinicians, academics and service users together. We will research, understand and develop new prevention, early intervention and treatment approaches more quickly than ever before, transforming mental health for young people locally and globally. You can see a video about our plans here

- Redeveloping our outdated estate:

Many of our buildings are no longer fit for 21st century mental healthcare – and our new facilities will provide better, purpose-designed facilities for patients’ care and recovery, and for our staff. We will develop our Lambeth Hospital site, along with Mapother House, Michael Rutter Centre, and the Professorial Buildings at Maudsley site, as new housing.

This will help meet the need for more local homes. More than half of the developments will be affordable housing. It will help us fund our major investments in new, better mental healthcare facilities and services.

The redeveloped Douglas Bennett House will house most of the Lambeth Hospital wards and services, following extensive consultations with staff, commissioners and local people. CAMHS inpatient and outpatient services will move into the new Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People. Ongoing discussions with service users, staff and partner organisations will support the moves, which are expected to take place in 2023.

Public Green Space:

Our plans include a new walkway that will pass through the Maudsley Hospital site, allowing direct access from De Crespigny Park to Denmark Hill station to better connect the community.

The pedestrian friendly, car-free development will include over 500 bicycle spaces. It has been designed to be welcoming, safe and accessible, with lots of green space. Although it will be car-free, there will access for bin collection and emergency vehicles.

These are artists impressions of how the walkway could look:
