Neuropsychiatry and Memory Disorders Clinic
Services Provided:
The Neuropsychiatry and Memory Disorders clinic at St Thomas's Hospital sees neuropsychiatric referrals for diagnostics and treatment. The referrals are commonly patients with memory disorders or other cognitive complaints which may be the result of, eg a head injury, hypoxic brain damage or may be associated with an underlying medical or psychiatric condition eg epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, lupus, depression, alcohol and post-traumatic stress disorder. Sometimes, though, there may not be any obvious causes.
The teams are multi-disciplinary, and include a consultant neuropsychiatrist and a neuropsychologist and a clinical psychologist and two counsellors. The Memory Aids Clinic is also available and is run by a clinical neuropsychologist.
The clinics receive local, national, and international referrals.
Diagnostic assessments include a detailed neuropsychiatric interview, detailed neuropsychological testing, blood, MRI, EEG and PET investigations as required.
Following assessment, if required, the patient may be offered a range of treatment options including psychiatric and neuropsychological follow up, cognitive behaviour therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, training in and use of memory aids, and counselling. This will depend on the nature of the presenting problem.
Liaison neuropsychiatric work is also undertaken on the medical and surgical wards.
