About the BRC
Our Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health (BRC) is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Our aim is to speed up the pace that latest medical research findings are turned into improved clinical care and services. We want to help prevent mental illness.
We are working towards 'personalised medicine' - developing treatments based on individual need. Our aim is to diagnose your illness more effectively and much earlier, assess which treatments will work best for you personally and then tailor the care you receive accordingly, so that you get better more quickly. Find out more in the following short film.
The strong partnership between the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), King's College London allows us to create a unique environment for scientists, clinicians, mental health professionals and service users to work together. Some ways we are doing this include:
-
developing the range of mental health translational research across seven mental health 'disorder' themes and three 'cross-cutting' themes
-
helping create the next generation of mental health translational researchers by offering advanced training for scientists, psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, clinicians, nurses and other health workers
-
developing innovative research methods and technologies to support translational research through our Analytical Methodologies and Biomedical Technologies 'cross-cutting' themes
-
encouraging increased patient and public participation in translational research through our Stakeholder Participation cross cutting theme and public engagement initiatives
-
forming new relationships with academic, government, clinical, industry and other key stakeholder groups to help move research findings into practice more quickly.
