Biomedical Research

In partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), King's College London, we have together established the National Institute for Health Research Mental Health Biomedical Research Centre and Dementia Unit.

Our centre is the only one specialising in the full spectrum of mental health research and one of four dementia units in the country. Our aim is to undertake translational and experimental medicine research in order to speed up the pace that latest medical research findings are turned into improved clinical care and services. We want to help advance the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care of mental illness.

We are working towards 'personalised medicine' - developing treatments based on individual need. Our goal is to diagnose mental illness more effectively and much earlier, assess which treatments will work best for the person and then tailor the care they receive accordingly, so that they get better faster.

Our partnership with the IoP allows us to create a unique environment for scientists, clinicians, mental health professionals and service users to work together to translate research into practice faster.
