The Mother and Baby Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital is holding a conference for GPs, commissioners, social workers and family court lawyers.

The day is an opportunity to find out more about the Mother and Baby Unit which specialises in the treatment of antenatal and postnatal mental illness. There will be speakers from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) as well as the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), King's College London and the NSPCC.

One in 500 new mothers will need admission to a psychiatric hospital as the result of mental illness. The 13 bed Mother and Baby Unit gives mothers who are unwell the opportunity to stay with their baby and this has proven to be effective in maintaining and improving their relationship with their child. The support provided to mothers also reduces the impact of their illness on their child.

The Mother and Baby Unit's clinical approach is underpinned by world-leading research and training in parenting and the team include a number of internationally recognised researchers. The team was recently cited as an example of pioneering good practice in the NSPCC's report All Babies Count (November 2011). The unit's parenting assessments and recommendations have been highly valued by 94 per cent of social workers who used the service.

The conference is being held on Monday 27 February 2012 between 9.30am and 4pm at Avonmouth House, SE1 6NX. To book your free place please complete and return the booking form.
