Find your way around the Mental Health Act

Following major revisions in 2007 to the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA), staff working in the field have had little in the way of practical, user friendly guidance - free of legal jargon and terminology - to steer them through this complex area - until now.

A completely revised The Maze - A Practical Guide to the Mental Health Act
1983 (amended by MHA 2007) - has just been published by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.  Originally published in 1987, with three subsequent reprints, the popular guide has not been printed since 1999 because of plans to revise the MHA.

Although the content has been completely revised, the book follows the approach of its predecessors and purposely distils the MHA's complex terminology into a practical, easy-to-use format.

A wide range of expert contributors cover important changes brought about by the amendments to the MHA, as well as changes in the 2005 Mental Capacity Act, 1998 Human Rights Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards which was introduced in April 2009.

Aimed at clinical staff working in mental health or acute hospital settings, Mental Health Act administrators, law students and professional staff at all levels, the book is not just suitable for those working in health, but also anyone involved in social care, legal or police work.

Copies can be ordered by emailing slamlearningsolutions@slam.nhs.uk and cost £14.95 each.
