Results of 2011 Members’ Council elections announced

SLaM's Members' Council is pleased to welcome the following new members:

Valerie Baker was elected in to the local service users' constituency and is a long-term service user, campaigner, advocate and a service user consultant with SLaM.

Andrew Glyn succeeded in the local¹ public constituency election and was previously a governor at King's College Hospital.

David Dean was elected in the national¹ public constituency and is a religious minister with medical training and a specific interest in mental health.

Nick Stewart was voted in to the SLaM staff constituency. Nick is a support worker and union representative and feels that it is important to represent the views of the people who deliver care for our service users.

And Martin Camden joined the carers' constituency unopposed and is both a service user and a carer.

Congratulations also to Polly de Blank (local service users' constituency), Michelle Baharier, John Muldoon and Noel Urwin (local public members' constituency) and Gill Todd (SLaM staff constituency) on being re-elected to the Members' Council.

Two vacancies arose in the staff constituency during the election period, so we are also able to welcome back Dr Francis Keaney.  The other vacancy will be filled in a by-election early in 2012.

Elected members of the Members' Council serve for three years.

The Members' Council supports the Trust's Board of Directors in setting the long term vision for the organisation and is effectively the 'voice' or executive arm of the membership. Although not responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation, the Trust's Board has a duty to consult and listen to the Council's views.

In total there are 40 seats on Members' Council with the majority elected from SLaM's membership.  Other seats are drawn from organisations that the Trust works closely with such as local authorities, other hospitals or voluntary organisations.

If you wish to contact any member of the Members' Council, please email membership@slam.nhs.uk or ring 0203 288 2441. The full list of members of the Members' Council can be found under 'Downloads' on the Members' Council website www.members.slam.nhs.uk

Notes

¹ In this context, 'local' means the four London boroughs where SLaM is the main provider of mental health services: Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. 'National' means anywhere in England and Wales outside of these four boroughs.
