Bethlem Royal Hospital Sunfayre 2011

Hundreds of local residents, service users, carers and staff are expected to attend the much-loved Bethlem Royal Hospital Sunfayre on Saturday 2 July (12pm to 5pm).

This free annual fete is open to everyone and offers a day of live entertainment, complementary therapies, children's entertainment and refreshments.   All visitors are welcome to explore and picnic in the extensive grounds, and to take part in the many activities including:

  • The famous Bethlem Hospital Archives and Museum - which records the lives, experiences and achievements of people with mental health problems (www.bethlemheritage.org.uk) - will be giving talks titled 'Meet a patient, Bethlem patients in the 1850's' along with visits to the historical Bethlem Hospital boardroom
  • View 'Ephemera' at Bethlem Gallery - an exhibition combining artists' use of everyday, throwaway things with items selected from a museum's collection of ephemera (www.bethlemgallery.com)
  • Take a stroll in the Walled Garden and buy some plants at the Garden Lodge
  • Take a 30-minute guided Nature Walk through the grounds
  • Watch live acts including a reggae band, Bromley Concert Band and Choir and a talent show made up of staff and patients.
  • Take part in art and ceramic workshops - beginners sessions led by artists - no experience necessary
  • Watch Wimbledon Women's final on giant screen
  • Have a free complementary therapy
  • And enjoy food from the complimentary buffet.

Event organiser Paul Wilkinson said: "The Sunfayre has been a popular event in the local social calendar for some years and we think that this year's event will be one of the best ever.  The day has something for everyone especially the younger members of the family."

Attraction for children include a tea cup ride, inflatable's, a bouncy castle, swings, a land train - not to mention the Punch and Judy show, clown, stilt walker and magic show.

Stalls will be open throughout the afternoon offering bric a brac, food, tarot readings, face painting, jewellery, cards and paintings.
